Murree disaster
The Prime Minister of Punjab
did not attend any of the four meetings when there was an urgent need in the
area, key officers of the equipment unit were not present at Murree. SourcesThere
have been four meetings in Murree this year to prepare for the snow and weather
but none have been attended by Punjab Prime Minister Sardar Usman Bazdar and
Commissioner Rawalpindi did not attend. In a report published in the national
newspaper The News, senior journalist and commentator Ansar Abbasi said that
according to official sources, one of the meetings was on December 13 under
Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi, two meetings were held on November 8 under
Assistant Commissioner Murree and the meeting was on November 30, and the
meeting was on November 30, 2021 und Murree Station Commander.
The biggest negligence of
the Punjab Roads Department Mechanical Wing was that unlike the SOPs, 16
snowmobiles were installed in one place (Sunny Bank) and at previous meetings
it was decided that the machines would be installed in the ideal areas of
Murree. It will be installed so that important roads remain clear. He said key
equipment unit officials were also missing in Murree at a time of great need in
the area and these people were using the equipment in Rawalpindi.
It also emerged that
snowmobile drivers arrived in the snow, not arriving before or during the snow.
The report also said that before the snowfall, despite many requests, the
Highways Construction Division did not repair roads, which is why cars were
closed and there was traffic congestion. The National Highways Authority also
expressed serious indifference to this as it had not made any arrangements to
clear the snow at Murree Expressway especially Lower Topa and Patrayatta.
As a result, overcrowding is
excruciating. No injuries were reported during the January 7 snowfall at
Express Highway, Mall Road, Jhika Gali, Kashmir Point, Bhurban Road etc.
Rawalpindi, on the other hand, said the district authorities and all
stakeholders, responsible for the resolution of such incidents, were fully
prepared and integrated people and resources as per the strategy. Numbers can
be addressed.
The number of visitors to the city limits was recorded and all stakeholders involved compiled a record over time. However, according to the official position, the weather got worse on January 7 and it turned into a hot storm, which has never happened in this area. In view of the situation, the Deputy Commissioner immediately ordered the closure of all roads leading to Murree. The report added that authorities insisted that rescue and assistance efforts by management and police continue throughout the night. This included removing cars, rescuing guests and providing assistance to missing persons. By the afternoon of January 8, civilian authorities had removed 80 percent of the closed vehicles. In response to a weather forecast, officials called for help from the military so that relief operations could continue.
