What's Going away on in the United States?
The "Hop-on-hop off" tram took me around town while the driver worked as a tour guide. How thrilled I was to see the places I had previously watched on television. I went to Congress, the Ford Theater (where President Lincoln was shot), and the Lincoln Memorial and stood in front of the White House. This month I was shocked to see more than 65,000 soldiers enter the District of Columbia and erect a razor-wire fence around it.
The state of Columbia is not a
state. In fact, it is like a foreign country surrounded by provinces. The
city of Washington and the District of Columbia were named after George
Washington and Christopher Columbus when they were built in 1790 to form the basis
of a united government. The state of Maryland and the
Commonwealth of Virginia each released parcels of land for the project which is
now only 10 square kilometers in size.
Now I am Canadian and I am
not really neutral when it comes to American politics but having a visitor
bring me to a point of reflection on the state of DC Medicine Hat is almost
equal to the District of Columbia (ten square. Miles). I wonder how we would feel if even 20,000 soldiers were fenced in with wire and razor blades. Will we be afraid? Will we worry
about the future? I think so.
Reports say 6,700 troops will
be permanently deployed in D.C. There is no end date for fencing. Democrats
have been trying to accuse President Trump of instigating a violation of
Congress on January 6, 2021. I wonder where the
security was that day because when I visited DC there were police everywhere
and there were none. The only way to get in is to spend an hour
without getting fired.
The problem did not start with Trump and unfortunately it did not end as he has disappeared (and is silent). Homes and businesses were burned, laws were reduced, and lives were lost. I wish Joe Biden's words were respected as he said he wanted peace and unity. But it is not possible! Do you remember the words of a popular song from the 1990's: “Peace on earth let it begin with me”? Do you have peace of mind or hate? Right now, the big problems seem to be south of the border but I don't want the Woodpecker to be attacked by soldiers or surrounded by fences. It is difficult to clean the ground when your bedroom is empty.
Something to think about!
